A. Recognize that pain management is part of a broader therapeutic endeavor known as palliative care. Know that palliative care is defined as the active, total care of the patient with active, progressive, life threatening disease. Recognize that palliative care involves a variety of health care professionals. Know that palliative care provides a model for continuing management including control of pain and symptoms, maintenance of function, psychosocial and spiritual support for the patient and family, and comprehensive care at the end of life.
